Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. This physical therapy is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is used to restore as well as maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body. In Canada, acupuncture has a long history in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). When doing acupuncture, our Naturopathic Doctors penetrate the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are further manipulated by hands or through electrical stimulation. Our NDs are well trained in acupuncture and continue their training as part of their continuing education program.

Bowen Therapy

The Bowen therapy includes the use of thumbs and fingers on specific points to perform a set of rolling-type moves. This activates the nerve bundles below the muscle and soft tissue of the patient’s body. This treatment is subtle, relaxing, and healing. Stimulating meridian points in a specific order prompts the body to repair and balance itself. Bowen therapy improves metabolism, reduces stress, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, ear infections, sports injuries, TMJ issues, back and sciatic pain, allergies, bedwetting, kidney and urinary tract issues, migraine headaches, and more. Clinically, this treatment can result in a 50% improvement.

Matrix Repatterning

Matrix repatterning is a clinically proven form of manual therapy that helps to restore structural balance, eliminate pain, and improve overall health. This therapy resolves issues at its source – literally at the molecular level.

Many problems that occur due to falls, sprains, strains, or motor vehicle collisions keep returning until the source of the problem is addressed. Various researchers have shown that physical effects resulting from these injuries can be absorbed by deep fascial structures that associate with fluid-filled organs and bones. Matrix repatterning addresses these cells within the structures thereby addressing the root cause of the issue. This allows for profound changes and lasting results. This therapy can be used to treat various conditions, including:

  • Head injury and concussion

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Dizziness

  • Ear noise

  • Joint problems

  • Snoring and sleep apnea

  • TMJ

  • Neck and upper back pain

  • Lower back pain

  • Shoulder and arm pain

  • Scoliosis

  • Carpel tunnel syndrome

  • Heartburn (GERD)

  • Digestive complaints

  • Circulatory conditions

  • Urinary incontinence

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Menstrual pain

  • Postural imbalance

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Chronic pain

Cupping

Cupping is an ancient healing therapy used by many cultures. Chinese, Native American, European, and African cultures all have or had a form of it. During a session, glass, silicone, earthenware, or plastic cups are placed on the body using suction and negative pressure. The pull created by the suction loosens muscles, encourages blood flow, and improves circulation to an area; it also decreases inflammation and sedates the nervous system.

From a scientific perspective, the exact mechanism of action for how cupping works is not completely understood (much like with acupuncture). Theories focus on the body’s nervous system response, hematological response, and immunological response to the physical stimuli. A number of physiological effects are documented from cupping including:

  • An increase in the body’s own natural opioid production in the brain (resulting in pain reduction)

  • A lowering of LDL cholesterol

  • A lowering of blood pressure

  • A reduction in inflammation

  • An increase in immune function

  • A significant lowering of blood sugar in diabetic patients

Cupping can be used for respiratory conditions, and to relieve back and neck pains, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite. Skin conditions, stomach and bowel problems including IBS, and lymphatic conditions also respond well to this therapy.

There are some challenges in conducting research of cupping, because randomized controlled trials require a placebo, and there is no suitable placebo in this case. That being said, a 2015 NIH systematic review and meta-analysis of cupping concluded that “cupping could be effective in treating the pain and disability associated with chronic neck pain and chronic low-back pain in the short term.” In one study of 70 patients suffering from tension and migraine headaches, the application of cupping improved 95 percent of the cases by reducing the severity of the headaches by an average of 66 percent, and the patients experienced the equivalent of 12.6 fewer days of headache per month. Additional research is clearly needed, but cupping shows great promise as an effective non-pharmaceutical pain reducer, reducing the physiological effects of stress, and speeding up muscle recovery.

Naturopathic Adjustments

Naturopathic Doctors can use a number of hands-on techniques to manipulate the spine, joints, and soft tissues. Moving a joint out of its normal range of motion is a Regulated Medical Controlled Act in Ontario. Naturopathic Doctors are one of a few health professions who are regulated to perform this kind of therapy. Hydrotherapy and the therapeutic use of light, heat, and cold, massage, and ultrasound may also be incorporated into treatment.
